Nityananda was a renunciate and yogi of 20th century India, largely considered to be an enlightened saint. Silent for much of his life, Nityananda’s powerful presence was his teaching. That same energy can be felt through this painting, which was created with open-eyes meditation in mind. While painting there was a moment when his face suddenly “clicked” into place and I could see and feel Nityananda in the image. That tangible sense of presence is the purpose of this work; to make the unseen visible and the essential accessible.

“Only when you see the sunrise in the sky of the heart can you describe it. But you must see it in yourself. If your mind and intellect are one with the Self, you can describe it. But if they are separate, it is not possible. The higher mind, what is called “subtle discrimination” or “spiritual discernment,” is the union of intelligence and spiritual wisdom.”
