Anandamayi Ma was a spiritual guru of 20th century Bengal, widely considered to be an enlightened saint. Although she was never formally educated or initiated in a yogic tradition, she went through a period of several years in which she ‘self-initiated’ ; offering herself initiation as the guru and receiving it as the disciple. Perhaps because of this, she emphasized direct spiritual experience and a devotion to God that included, yet transcended, any particular spiritual tradition or practice.

This piece was painted in silence while repeating mantra as a practice of ‘tuning-in’ to the refined energy of Anandamayi Ma. There was a sense of communion while painting that is present when sitting with the finished work; which can be worked with in open-eye meditation as a murti, or energetic conduit. In the final stages of painting, I suddenly remembered to include the red bindi to complete her face. Having applied the red paint to the canvas, I felt that it needed to be dabbed to integrate into the skin tone. Without considering it further, I took a paper towel and pressed the dot with my thumb. Upon removing it, I heard a resounding ‘Done.’ and knew the painting was complete. Surprised, I recognized the application of the bindi with my thumb as the traditional gesture of blessing from the Guru to disciple. It seemed that Anandamayi Ma had again initiated herself; blessing the painting and receiving her own blessing.

“Whether you worship Christ, Krishna, Kali or Allah, you actually worship the one Light that is also in you, since It pervades all things.”
